The Bronco was developed by Ford starting in 1966 as its first SUV model. It was originally made to compete in the off-road world against Jeep CJ-5 and the International Harvester Scout. As demand shifted towards SUVs with on-road performance, Ford redesigned the Bronco beginning with the second generation in 1978 to compete against the Chevy Blazer, Dodge Ramcharger, and Jeep Cherokee. Production of three more generations ran through 1996 until demand declined for Ford to discontinue the Bronco and replace it with the Ford Expedition. Beginning in 2021, the sixth generation has returned. The 1969 Bronco was part of the first generation (1966 to 1977) which was developed as a simple square-body four-wheel drive compact SUV. It came in three body styles: SUV, pickup truck, and an open top roadster. This generation had engine offerings of two inline six and two V8s. The design remained mostly unchanged until the second generation due to limited funds. 20,956 units were sold for the 1969 model year.
