Today’s Classic Car Finds 04/05/2023

The Mercury Comet was initially produced as an Edsel, but after Edsel was pulled in 1959, Ford marketed it as just the Comet in 1960-62 until given the nameplate under Mercury. It was “the everything” car for Mercury first based on a stretched Ford Falcon frame. The Comet was produced from 1960-69 and 1971-77. Part of the second generation, the 1965 received updated styling on the front and rear. The 404 came with additional bodyside chrome and side window moldings. It got updated engine offerings but kept the standard three-on-the-tree transmission. There was an optional automatic three-speed transmission known as the “Merc-O-Matic”. Body styles offered were the two- and four-door sedans and a station wagon. The 1965 Comet accounted for 47.5 percent of Mercury’s entire output that year. Did you know a 1965 Comet was used by the main character in the 1974 movie “Dead of Night”?
