The 1966 Chrysler New Yorker: Chrysler’s Peak of 60s Luxury

A Classic American Luxury Icon

For Sale: 1966 Chrysler New Yorker

The 1966 Chrysler New Yorker was one of Chrysler’s flagship models during the mid-1960s. It featured a blend of refined design, powerful engineering, and upscale features.

Building upon the 1965 redesign, the 1966 New Yorker featured some slight updates. The exterior received a refreshed grille, updated tail lamps, and revised side trim, maintaining the clean, slab-sided aesthetic. The model was available in three body styles: a four-door, six-window Town Sedan; a two-door hardtop; and a four-door hardtop. The Town & Country station wagon was no longer part of the New Yorker line, having become its own series.

Under the hood, the 1966 New Yorker introduced the new 440 cubic inch (7.2-liter) RB V8 engine, replacing the previous 413 CID V8. The standard 440 engine produced 350 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, while the optional high-performance 440 TNT package delivered 365 horsepower, featuring a twin-snorkel air cleaner and dual exhausts. This powertrain was paired with the renowned 3-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, ensuring smooth and reliable gear shifts.

Inside, the New Yorker emphasized comfort and sophistication. The cabin boasted plush seating, woodgrain accents, and soft-touch materials. Optional features included air conditioning, power windows, power seats, and an adjustable tilt-and-telescopic steering column.

Despite Chrysler’s overall production and sales increasing by nearly 29% in 1966, New Yorker sales experienced a slight decline to 47,579 units. Nevertheless, the model was celebrated for offering luxury features typically reserved for higher-priced vehicles, making upscale amenities more accessible to a broader audience.
