Mid-Century Elegance
The 1960 Buick Electra was part of Buick’s first-generation lineup for the Electra (1959–1960). Initially introduced in 1959 to replace the Roadmaster and Limited, the Electra (and its extended Electra 225 variant) featured a commanding 401 cu.in. “Wildcat 445” V‑8 engine producing 325 hp paired with a two-speed Turbine Drive automatic transmission.
For 1960, Buick softened the bold 1959 look by toning down the fins and chrome and introducing a concave grille with horizontally aligned quad headlights with a new Tri‑Shield emblem. The iconic VentiPorts returned in 1949 style, restoring four portholes per side on Electra models.
Inside, innovative touches like the “Mirromagic” tilting mirror speedometer aimed to reduce glare, while the coil-sprung full suspension and K-braced frame ensured a comfortable ride even across winding roads.
Available in multiple body styles including two- and four-door hardtops, sedans, and the notable Electra 225 Riviera convertible. Despite its size (221.2 inches long for the base Electra and 225.9 inches for the Electra 225) owners praised its handling as comfortable and confident.
Luxury options available were: power seats, windows, steering, brakes, air conditioning, and automatic headlights (Twilight Sentinel), underscoring its status as a flagship model.
The Electra name would continue for six more generations until 1990, but the 1960 model remains a standout showcase of Buick’s blend of innovation, comfort, and mid-century elegance.
