The American LaFrance Fire Engine Company (ALF) was incorporated in 1904, but traces back to one of the oldest fire apparatus manufacturers in the United States mainly producing fire engines, fire aerials, ambulances, and rescue vehicles. The beginnings go back to 1832 with the first motorized fire engine introduced in 1907. The company closed their doors in 1985 but reopened in 1986 and staying in production through 1994. Freightliner purchased the remaining company in 1995 and continued to use ALF’s original nameplates. It finally closed its doors for good in 2014. In 1968, rear-mounted ladders were introduced.
