Today’s Classic Car Finds 7/26/2022

The Volkswagen Type 3 was a compact car produced by Volkswagen from 1961 to 1973, initially as the Volkswagen 1500 and later as the Volkswagen 1600. It was offered in three body styles: Notchback (Euro and Canadian market), Fastback, and the Variant (known as the Squareback in the US). The Type 3 was introduced after the success of the Type 1 (Beetles) and Type 2 (Vans) model lines. There was also a related line, the Type 34 Karmann Ghia. The idea behind the Type 3 was for a family car style offering with it having both front and rear enclosed luggage areas. This line was initially produced with a 1.5L air-cooled flat-4 engine and a fully synchronized four-speed manual transmission. In 1968 (model year 1969 for US), a three-speed fully automatic transmission was offered along with an CV-jointed independent rear suspension. The Type 3 models enjoyed moderate popularity in the US and are now some of the rarest air-cooled VWs to be found. For 1968, 95,528 units were produced.
