The Mercury Comet was initially produced as an Edsel, but after Edsel was pulled in 1959, Ford marketed it as just the Comet in 1960-62 until given the nameplate under Mercury. It was “the everything” car for Mercury first based on a stretched Ford Falcon frame. The Comet was produced from 1960-69 and 1971-77. Part of the second generation, the 1965 received updated styling on the front and rear. It got updated engine offerings but kept the standard three-on-the-tree transmission. There was an optional automatic three-speed transmission known as the “Merc-O-Matic”. The 1965 Comet accounted for 47.5 percent of Mercury’s entire output that year. Did you know a 1965 Comet 202 was used by the main character in the 1974 movie “Dead of Night”?
