Panel vans, or sedan delivery vans, are small cargo vehicles built upon a passenger car chassis, with the body having “panels” in place of where the windows would be on the sides and rear of the van. This body type was well established in the 1920s, with Chevrolet being often credited with the first true sedan delivery body style in 1928. The North American vans were typically based on the two-door station wagon models of the time. Generally, the late 1940s through the late 1950s were considered the golden age of these vehicles with them being very popular among the younger crowds in the 1960s. The van was deemed no longer practical after 1959 and was phased out shorter thereafter. These panel vans were used mostly for the transportation of many types of goods for short distances. The load capacity was similar to a standard pickup truck but had the advantage of being enclosed. These vans also become popular for advertising slogans being painted on the panels. Also in the earlier years, the van become useful for the law enforcement agencies in transporting criminals to and from jail and courthouses. This use was where we got the name “paddy wagon” from.
