For Sale: 1949 Kaiser Frazer
The 1949 Kaiser-Frazer cars were the product of the Kaiser-Frazer Corporation, founded by industrialist Henry J. Kaiser and automobile executive Joseph W. Frazer in the aftermath of World War II. The company sought to challenge the dominance of the Big Three automakers—Ford, GM, and Chrysler—by introducing a new type of vehicles for the rapidly expanding postwar car market. In 1949, Kaiser-Frazer offered two distinct brands: Kaiser, aimed at families with its affordability and practicality, and Frazer, which targeted the upscale market with luxurious trims and features.
The cars were noted for their “pontoon” body style with smooth, flowing lines and integrated fenders that eliminated running boards—a change from more traditional designs of the era. The top-tier Manhattan trim offered high-end styling, enhanced materials, and a premium feel. These cars were powered by a 226.2 cubic inch flathead six-cylinder engine paired with a three-speed manual transmission, with an optional overdrive for better fuel efficiency. The engine produced around 100 horsepower, which was competitive for its time but not class-leading.
While Kaiser-Frazer did experience initial success, their total production in 1949 was around 81,000 vehicles. As the Big Three automakers ramped up production and offered more powerful, competitively priced models, Kaiser-Frazer’s market share began to dwindle. The company struggled with high production costs and limited resources, which, coupled with its reliance on a single engine type, hindered its ability to compete effectively.
The 1949 Kaiser-Frazer models were innovative in design, being among the first to adopt integrated fender designs and modernize vehicle styling. The Frazer brand was discontinued by 1951, and Kaiser continued production until 1955 in the United States (with some international production continuing slightly longer). While their time in the market was short-lived, Kaiser-Frazer cars remain a significant chapter in American automotive history, representing the innovative spirit of independent automakers in the mid-20th century.
