The Chevrolet Malibu, named after Malibu, California, was a top trim level of the mid-size Chevelle produced over nine generations from 1964 to 1983 and again from 1997 to today. It became its own model line in 1978. The early generations was a rear-wheel drive and was redesigned as a front-wheel drive when GM revived the Malibu in 1997. The offerings for the Malibu were a four-door sedan, two-door Sport Coupe hardtop, convertible, and two-seat station wagon. The Malibu is the only sedan now offered by Chevrolet in the US. The 1966 Chevelle was offered in four models: the “SS” Super Sport 396, Malibu (the top seller), Chevelle 300 Deluxe, and Chevelle 300 that came in convertible, sport coupe and sedan, wagons, and two- and four-door sedan body styles. The two simulated scoops – a signature of the SS – were introduced in 1966. Most models offered the 194 Six or 283 V8 as the standard engine, with a 327 V8 as an option. The SS models had the 396 V8 as standard with a higher horsepower 396 V8 as an option. There have been more than 8.5 million Malibus produced during its lifetime.
