The LeMans was produced from 1962 to 1981 over five generations, eventually being replaced by the Bonneville. The LeMans was originally based on the Pontiac Tempest, but that name was finally dropped altogether beginning in 1971, the middle of the third generation. The car came in a 2- or 4-door sedan along with a 2-door hardtop option. Many different options were offered for equipment based on the trim package (T-37 and GT-37) along with a Sport offering. There was also a trim package of GTO and GTO Judge (later generations) that was eventually turned into its own model. There were six engine choices ranging from the 250 cu-in. 6-cylinder up to the 455 CID HO V-8. Did you know that a 1971 LeMans was used by the main character in the movie “The French Connection”?
