Ford developed a full-sized line of automobiles during the late 1950s that were termed Fairlane. The Galaxie was the named used for the top trim models in conjunction with the “500” and “500XL” tags. The Galaxie name was chosen to capitalize on the excitement surrounding the Space Race of the time. This model line ran from 1959 to 1974, being replaced by the Ford LTD. For 1959, the parking brake became a pedal. Seat belts, a padded dashboard, and child-proof rear door locks were options. The body styles offered were a two-door sedan, a four-door sedan, a two-door hardtop, a four-door hardtop, and convertible. The top-of-the-line engine was a 352 cu.in. V8. There were 464,100 Galaxies produced in 1959.
