The Thunderbird was produced by Ford Motor Company over eleven generations from 1955 to 1997 and again from 2002 to 2005. Initially it was designed as a two-seat convertible but was produced in many body styles over its lifetime including a four-seat hardtop coupe, four-seat convertible, five-seat hardtop, five-seat convertible, four-door pillared hardtop sedan, five-passenger pillared coupe, six-passenger hardtop coupe, and a two-seat convertible. The 1960 model was the end of the second generation that ran from 1958 to 1960. This second generation saw the change from the two-seater to a four-seater and opened a new market of the personal luxury car. This was the first individual model line to earn Motor Trend “Car of the Year” award. Nicknamed the “Squarebird”, this generation came as a hardtop or convertible with new styling such as quad headlights, bigger tailfins, larger chrome grille, and larger hood scoop. The 1960 model had some minor restyling on the grille and triple taillights, along with an optional manually operated sunroof. The engine offering was a new 352 cu.in. (5.8L) FE V8 with a three-speed manual or automatic transmission. Did you know a 1960 Thunderbird was used extensively on the 60s TV show “Perry Mason”?
