The Karmann Ghia was a car produced by Volkswagen in two body styles: a 2+2 coupe from 1955 to 1974 and a 2+2 convertible from 1957-1974. It was designated the Type 14 and took the chassis and mechanicals from the Type 1 (VW Beetle), the styling from Italy’s Ghia, and the hand-tooled body work by Germany’s Karmann. It exceeded expectations and become the most imported car to the US. Even though there were few changes throughout its entire run, the 1972 model was given larger square-section bumpers and larger taillights. The standard engine was a 1.6L four-cylinder that put out 60 hp. The Ghia was enjoyed for its styling, quality, and being fun to drive, but not so much for its performance. Here is a nice summary of the few year to year changes.
