The Willy’s Jeep DJ5 series was produced from 1965 to 1983 or 1984. The DJ stands for “Dispatcher Jeep” and is a two-wheel drive version of the four-wheel drive CJ series. In 1970, AMC purchased the Jeep division and built the Jeep DJ through 1984. The differences from the CJ series included being completely enclosed, rear-wheel drive, sliding doors, and a swinging rear door. The lettering system was introduced in 1967, starting with the DJ-5A, indicating changes made. The DJ5s were mainly right-hand drive Jeeps for use in the postal system and had a 134 cu.in. (2.2L) Willy’s Hurricane straight-four F-head engine with a three-speed manual transmission (for years 1965-67). They then started having the AMC straight-six 3.8L or 4.0L engines. The DJs are not that desirable for various reasons like being a very spartan metal box with no comforts, hard to drive, and being top heavy.
