Today’s Classic Car Finds 09/20/2023

The 1972 Pontiac GTO marked the culmination of the second generation of this iconic American muscle car that began in 1964. After 1972, GTO was reverted to a trim package of the LeMans. This generation saw a redesign of its A-body to a more curvaceous, semi-fastback style. New for this time was the “Endura” paint-matching rubber bumper, dual hood scoops, dual exhausts, hidden windshield wipers, and hidden headlights. The top-end trim package “The Judge” also debuted.

Engine options were the 400 cu.in. Ram Air II, III, and IV along with a new 455 cu.in. V8. For the 1972 model year, all Ram Air options were dropped with a 400 cu.in., 455 cu.in., or a 455 cu.in. HO being available. Stricter emissions regulations forced the drop in power outputs, contributing to its decline in sales.

There was a total of 5,807 1972 models sold with most being the two-door hardtop.
