The Chieftain is a car produced by Pontiac from 1949 to 1958 across three generations. It began with four model types: a sedan, sedan coupe, business coupe, and a deluxe convertible coupe. A station wagon option was added in 1952. The 1949 model initially came with a choice of a 239.2 cu.in. L-head six-cylinder or a 248.9 cu.in. L-head V8 engine along with a three-speed manual or four-speed hydramatic automatic transmission. The 1953 Chieftain was part of the first generation (1949-1954). This year saw a new body style which included the bubbled-up fins on the rear, a new suspension system, power steering, and a one-piece windshield. It came with a gas gauge, ammeter, oil pressure gauge, and a temperature gauge. The six-cylinder engine was the standard offering having aluminum pistons. Notable optional extras were a radio with seven vacuum tubes, a tissue dispenser, under seat heaters, and a Remington Auto-Home shaver. One fun feature was the new Indian Chief hood ornament that was illuminated when the headlights were turned on.
