The GMC “New Look” bus is a city transit bus introduced in 1959 to replace the “Old Look” transit bus, becoming the first new major city bus design in more than 20 years. It was produced through 1977 with more than 44,000 buses made during that time period. It also had the nickname of “Fishbowl” for the windshield design. Most NL buses were equipped with the Detroit Diesel Series 71 two-cycle engine. This transit bus was one of the iconic buses due to its long career of ferrying passengers throughout many cities. The 1971 was part of the third generation of NL buses with various updates given. The three roof head and taillights (called “Michigan Markers”) were added as standard equipment and an alternator-based electrical system was introduced during this model year. The GM 8V71 engine became an option on the 40-foot buses during this generation as well.
