Buick introduced the Riviera in 1963 as a personal luxury car aimed at the upscale market. The name is Italian for coastline and was chosen for the affluence of the French Riviera.

The 1969 model year is part of the second generation that ran from 1966 to 1970. This generation had significant changes from the first being larger and more angular, with a squared-off roofline and a distinctive “boat tail” rear end. The 1969 featured a new grille, restyled rear bumper, and updated trim. The interior could be customized with various upholstery options. There were also many colorful exterior paint offerings.

A range of V8 engines were offered with a 7.0L being standard paired with a three-speed TH-400 automatic transmission. Two versions of the Riviera were available: the standard and the Gran Sport. The GS included a higher-performance engine, sportier suspension, and unique GS badging.

There were 52,872 units sold in 1969.

Did you know that a 1969 Buick Riviera was driven by the main characters in the TV show “The Rockford Files” (James Garner) and the 1980 movie “The Hunter” (Steve McQueen)?
