Peterbilt began making trucks in the 1930s for logging and lumber purposes. It specializes in medium-duty and heavy-duty classes (Class 5-7 and Class 8) of commercial trucks. It later pioneered the use of aluminum, which made for a much lighter truck and allowed for larger cargo weight. The model 359 was one of Peterbilt’s mainstays offering the first long hood truck. It was first manufactured in 1967 and was eventually replaced by the model 379 in 1987. In 1979, Peterbilt began using model numbers starting with a “3” to designate all their trucks. The very large engine compartment made it popular among truckers. Peterbilt trucks are easily identified by the large red oval brand emblem (began in 1953) and the “bird” style hood ornament on conventional cabs (began in 1965). Did you know a 1979 359 was used in the 1980 movie “Smokey and the Bandit”?
