Today’s Classic Truck Finds 7/6/2022

The Ford E-series is a range of full-sized vans introduced in 1961 and the line is in its fourth generation. The nameplates were Econoline or Club Wagon. The model options were a cargo van, pickup truck, and a passenger van. The initial engine offered was a 144 cu.in. inline six with a 170 cu.in. inline six as an option. The Econoline established many new design components that were readily adopted by other designs of American vans, like the mid-engine configuration placing the engine behind the front axle. Ford also discovered during testing that the rear-end would raise up with hard braking with the solution being adding a 165-pound weight under the truck’s bed at the end. The Econoline pickup trucks were very popular for light-duty commercial and utility businesses, farmers, and delivery services. Two reasons why were the 7.5 ft extended bed (a first) and the 25-30 miles per gallon fuel economy. Even though the E-series line is Ford’s second longest running nameplate, the pickup truck only lasted seven short years during the 1960s as the van style proved more popular.
