The British Triumph Spitfire is a front-engine, rear-wheel drive, two-passenger car produced to compete in the small sports car market. It was introduced in 1962 and had continued production through 1980. The 1974 model straddled the end of the fourth (the Mark IV) and beginning of the fifth generations (the 1500).
The Spitfire’s attractive appearance featured curvaceous body lines, a rounded front grille, and a foldable convertible top, embodying the essence of open-top motoring. Under the hood, the 1974 Spitfire Mark IV was powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine, providing around 63 horsepower. While not exceptionally powerful, the car’s lightweight build allowed for spirited driving on the road.
The Spitfire won numerous popular street and rally races in the 1960s. Initially named the Triumph Bomb, it was changed to the Spitfire after a WWII fighter plane with the same name.
