The Plymouth Duster was born in 1970 as a sportier, performance-driven, semi-fastback, two-door coupe version of the Plymouth Valiant and ran through 1976. The Duster came away as a success, competing against Ford’s Maverick, AMC’s Hornet, and Chevy’s Nova. There were various trim and option packages available throughout this six-year period including Duster, Duster 340, Gold Duster, Silver Duster, Space Duster, Duster 360, and Duster Twister. The Duster was originally going to be named after the WB character Tasmanian Devil, like the Road Runner was named after a character, but the license agreement fell through. Hence, the name Duster was used instead, and the logo was created as a whirlwind cloud of dust (like how the Tasmanian Devil moves) with eyes. The 1971 became its own style and there wasn’t much change for the 1975 model, though the engines became underpowered and lackluster due to the new laws at the time and the Duster soon disappeared from the Plymouth line-up in mid-1976.
