The third generation of Pontiac Firebirds (1967 to 2002) came along in late 1981 and lasted through 1992. This generation was the first Firebirds with factory fuel injection, 4-speed auto transmission, 5-speed manual transmission, 16-inch wheels, and hatchback bodies, while the large hood emblem disappeared forever. Two concealed pop-up headlights were also introduced for the first time. Wind tunnels were used to help design the new F-body shape and was the most aerodynamic product GM had ever produced. The new 5.7L V8 with TPI (tuned port injection) that only came with an automatic transmission was also introduced for 1987. The 5.0L TPI was still available with a 5-speed manual transmission and was actually quicker than the new 5.7L TPI. There were 21,788 Trans Am models built out of a total of 88,612 Firebird production in 1987. Did you know that Dwight from “The Office” drives a 1987 Trans Am?
