The Ford F-series pickup truck line was developed post-WWII when Ford began to look at trucks as being possible for the average American outside of its standard use in commercial fleets and farms. This helped the F-series line become the most successful vehicle line in history. The company called the new cab design the “Million Dollar Cab” because of the million dollars spent on research and tooling. This new series, also known as the “Bonus Built Line”, had a wide range of models with different cab and chassis combinations. These were designated F1 through F8, with the F1 being a half-ton, the F2 being a three-quarter ton, and the F3 a one ton. The other models were heavier duty models. The models F1 through F6 came standard with an inline six engine known as the “Rouge 226” with an optional engine of a flathead V8 known as the “Rouge 239”. A three-speed, floor-shift transmission was standard with an optional fourth speed. There was also the optional “Spiralounge Seat” available, which was a single driver’s seat with a special hydraulic shock absorber and spring that could be adjusted to the driver’s weight. There were moderate revisions and styling changes for 1951 along with the hardwood bed floor being introduced. Ford marketed this generation (first generation of 1951-1952) as “The World’s Greatest Trucks”.
