The Mercury Monterey was a line of full-size cars produced from 1952 to 1974. Over its life of seven generations, it was offered in many body styles from coupes, convertibles, sedans, hardtops, and station wagons. It was revived in 2004 for three years as a minivan. Beginning in 1952, all Mercury autos were given a restyling and redesign. The first generation, in which the 1953 was included, was setup as a luxury two-door coupe that became part of the Mercury Eight series. The 53 model also represented the 50th Anniversary of the Ford Motor Company. Eleven colors and seventeen two-tone color combinations were offered. The engines were a 255 cu.in. (4.2L) flathead V8 (the last year for this engine choice) or a 256 cu.in. (4.2L) Ford y-block V8 along with either a three-speed manual or a three-speed Merc-O-Matic automatic transmission. There were a total of 148,700 1953 Monterey’s produced: 64,033 four-door sedans, 76,115 two-door coupes, and 8,450 convertibles. Did you know a 1953 Monterey convertible was used by the main character in the 1954 movie “The Long, Long Trailer”?
